Japanese Maple Tree Seedlings

Japanese Maple tree seedlings

Many people think that the Japanese maple tree seedling tree that grows from a particular named Japanese maple tree will be identical to the parent.

Sorry, but that is not the case and you cannot call the seedling the same name as the parent tree.

The reason is that the "mom" Japanese maple tree you get the seed from has been visited by a bee or other insect and fertilized with pollen from an unknown tree.

So just as our children are similar to, but not identical to the parents, so the Japanese maple tree seedlings from the known, named mom" tree is a hybrid and will only have similar characteristics, not identical characteristics to the parents.

This is why we also graft Japanese maple trees. This is a method of cloning the tree so we do get an identical tree which can carry the name of the "parent" tree.

So, have fun with Japanese maple tree seedlings grown from seed. You never know what new shape. color or characteristic y might get. each year we select a few different looking specimens to grow on and see if we like them enough to propagate as a new named tree.

Japanese Maple Tree Seeds from "Viridis"

Very occasionally it's possible to get a limited quantity of fresh seeds from the green dissectum or cutleaf Japanese maple cultivar "Viridis".

Well now is one of those rare times!

So if you've ever thought about trying to grow your own Japanese maple tree from seed and you like the laceleaf, weeping style trees - this is your chance!

Get fresh, new season Viridis Japanese Maple Seeds.

It's very important to use fresh seed. This is the little known "nursery secret" to successful germination. Most people sell dry seed that needs to be reconstituted by soaking in water and inevitably, you get a lower level of germination with this technique.

Typically we get over 90% germination with most seeds, and the Viridis seed we have is rated as 83% germination.

It's fun growing trees from seed. You never know what you'll get. Hopefully the characteristics of the seedlings will be similar to the "mom" parent the seed came from. But as we don't know who the "dad' tree was who supplied the pollen, we can't be sure.

Shishigashira Japanese Maple Tree

Shishigashira means ''lion''s head'' or ''lion''s mane''. The bunched up leaves on short shoots give rise to the image of this mythical lion from Japanese drama.

It is a compact grower making it a good choice for smaller gardens, containers and bonsai. Slow growing, but can reach up to 15 feet tall on maturity. Plants are 10-15" tall.

Has deep green foliage and keeps its color well - even in sun. Fall colors are gold with rose and crimson tones. Shishigashira provides an outstanding effect in the garden! It has been known in Japan for over 120 years.

Shojo shidare Japanese Maple Tree

Many people know the weeping red dissectum Japanese maple "Crimson Queen" - it's the one you see in most garden centers - boring!

If you want something different, try Shojo shidare. It has deep maroon-red leaves that darkens as the new Spring foliage matures. There's a great 2-tone effect with green color down the center of the leaf lobe and sub-lobes.

Like it's sister Crimson Queen, it forms a cascading or weeping bushy tree that can get to 10 feet tall if grafted high and staked in its early years to accentuate the height. This is a little known tree that is beuatiful. Can be a little more tender - but worth it to dare to be different!

News From the Nursery:

More of our 2005 season fresh Acer palmatum seed
is arriving this week. Shiping is expected to begin
around the 5th of November for these seeds.

It's been a hard month here as I had a bad fall in
September and badly injured the patellar tendon below my
right knee! Ouch!

The surgery all went well, but it's going to be a long
and slow recovery before I can bend my knee again and
start walking around the nursery without crutches! So
apologies in advance if I can't get back to you as
quickly as usual - I've been told to take it very slow
and conservative in healing and rushing around isn't
good for me!

Still, at least now we've had our first frost and
leaves are turning and falling - there is a little less
to do in keeping up with the trees, just getting them all
ready for winter and starting to thinkj about germinating
seeds again.

I'm still hopeful of getting seed from cultivars we've never
had before from a new source! Watch out for more seed news
in a month or so.

'Osakazuki' Japanese Maple Seeds
==================

This is seed from a 'Osakazuki' Japanese maple. Parent
is well known for its vibrant crimson fall color. Its
intense color has often been compared to the “burning
bush”. Its leaves are fairly sun resistant and this
“upright” reaches about 18 feet in height.

'Ornatum' Japanese Maple Seeds
==================

This is seed from a 'Ornatum' Japanese maple. Parent has
a height and spread of about 12 feet (Fig. 1). Usually is
grown for its red-colored leaves, interesting growth habit
and fine leaf texture. Fall color is a dark burgundy-red
and is often striking, even on trees grown in shade. Growth
habit is a weeping globe, branching to the ground.

'Omure yama' Japanese Maple Seeds
==================

This is seed from a 'Omure yama' Japanese maple. Parent is
commonly called the weeping willow maple. It grows upright
but has weeping branches, so it will get much taller than
the more common weeping cultivars such as Inabare Shidare
or Waterfall. The leaves are green with a slight pink tint
in summer but turn orange-yellow, rather than red, in the
fall.

Remember, as we say in our e-course on growing maples
from seed, seedlings will be similar to but not identical
to the parents. This is part of the fun of growing from
seed - you never know exactly what you'll get!

2. Seed Germination Tip
=======================

Having read our e-course you'll know we recommend using
fresh seed and simply chilling this for 100-120 days.

You do need to check your seed every few week or two
and see how it is doing in the refrigerator. If you think
the seed is drying out, add a DROP or two of water to your
zipper bag holding the seeds.

The seed needs to stay hydrated but does NOT want to be
sitting in a pool of water. If you see any signs of
mold developing, you can spray with a small amount of a
fungicide - read the label directions carefully before use.

'Burgundy Lace' Red Japanese Maple Tree

Japanese maple 'Burgundy Lace' has deeply divided leaves with a strong burgundy red color. As Summer progresses the color bronzes out to a greenish color.

Leaves can sometimes burn in full sun. Makes a spreading small tree up to 18 feet on maturity. Can fit in smaller landscape with some pruning.

It has large red leaves and is upright growing, reaching 30 feet on maturity.

'Bloodgood' has a good deep red color that holds up well into the Summer with less ''bronzing'' than many cultivars. Like most Japanese maples, some afternoon shade is beneficial to prevent sunburn.

How To Germinate Japanese Maple Seeds

The common view is that germinating Japanese maple tree seeds is hard to do.

Well I'm here to tell you that's not true. At least it's not true if you know the 'nursery secret' that virtually guarantees we get 95% or better germination!

You see most seed sellers sell you dry seed.

So the common advice is to soak the seeds for 24 - 48 hours then stratify them (keep them cool) for 90-120 days before sowing. The very act of letting the seed dry out instantly reduces your germination rate.

Then you have to rehydrate the seeds and that may or may not work well. So you're behind before you even get started.

The 'secret' of germination success with Japanese Maple tree seed is to use FRESH, new season seed.
